Introduction
I am a senior lecturer in U.S. history at Royal Holloway, University of London, a post I took up in 2004. My research focuses on the American South between the Civil War and World War Two, with particular interests in folk culture, historical memory, racial violence, and working-class life, including labour organisation.

Research
My past research has included such topics as the folklore surrounding lynchings, the cultural politics of early country music, rural labour organisations in the post-Reconstruction South, social memory of lynching, and social memory of Reconstruction. Geographically, my work has centred on South Carolina and North Carolina.
