‘Health’ has always been a key theme in development theory and practice, with basic health statistics and access to health services being used as measures of ‘development’. ‘Health’ is also used as a campaigning focus, with, for example, WHO’s slogan ‘Health for All by 2000’ and current International Development Targets which include reductions in child, infant and maternal mortality, and access to reproductive health services through a primary health care system. It is clear, however, that behind these statistics and slogans, lie a complex series of processes, involving poverty, social inequality, environmental degradation and macroeconomic policies.
Geographers engaged in research in developing areas have contributed greatly to an understanding of these processes. However, because of the diversity of their research areas, there is often little opportunity for dialogue. This conference will provide researchers with a forum to share research findings and policy recommendations.
The conference will be held at The University of Liverpool on Wednesday 14 March 2003. All sessions will be in the Alistair Pilkington Building. Refreshments are included in the registration fee. Maps of City and University
