Being on a fixed-term or temporary contract in academia can often make conference attendance very difficult. For contract research staff funded by a particular project, there may not be an allowance for conference travel, or if there is, it may be restricted to project-related meetings. Some contract staff may find themselves working outside Geography temporarily and may want to maintain their links with the Geography discipline through conference attendance. Finally, a common problem for staff on short-term contracts is that the end of a contract may occur after a call for papers but before the conference itself, making planning and funding difficult. It is for these reasons that the CRTF is offering small bursaries for conference attendance to geographers working on fixed-term or temporary contracts. Applicants are asked to bear in mind the principles behind this when applying for a bursary.
1. Eligibility
Applicant must:
a) Be a member of the Contract Research and Teaching Forum of the
RGS-IBG (Membership of CRTF is free, and separate membership of
RGS-IBG is NOT necessary).
b) Be on a short-term research/teaching contract either within a
Geography Department or are seeking funding to attend a Geography
conference.
c) Be presenting a paper at a *national* or *international*
conference.
d) Seek matched funding from their Department or Project.
2. Process
a) Complete the simple application form attached – grants are
normally for £50.
b) Deadline is 2 months before start of conference, although we
will have a limited number of Grants per year so we suggest you
apply as soon as your paper is accepted onto the conference
programme.
c) Submit form electronically to CRTF Conference Grant Officer
(Dr. Sean Carter on S.Carter@exeter.ac.uk).
d) The Conference Grant Officer refers to the whole Board for
decision and endorsement.
e) If successful, the Treasurer writes a cheque out to the
individual upon receipt of original travel documents and/or
conference registration documents up to the amount of the Grant
(can be done at conference if Treasurer present).
f) Successful applicants will be expected to submit a short
(200 word) summary of their presentation to the Secretary of the
CRTF within one month of the paper being presented at the conference.
3. Amounts
CRTF will support approved travel costs (second class rail or
flights only) and conference registration up to but not exceeding
£50. CRTF will limit the number of awards it makes in any given
calendar year.
