Staff Research Interests

COLLABORATION / RESEARCH FUNDING

The long-established multi-disciplinary structure of the Department means that research interests often cut cross disciplinary boundaries. Much of the research being done in the Department involves collaboration with academics elsewhere in the United Kingdom and in Europe and with health and social service professionals in the surrounding region. Among current external funders of academic staff's research are the Economic and Social Research Council, the Medical Research Council, the Nuffield Foundation, the Joseph Rowntree Trust, the Commission for Racial Equality and Surrey County Council, bringing in over [[sterling]]2m of research income since 1989.

The Department received a 3a rating in the 1993 Research Assessment Exercise for both sociology and social policy. The proximity of the College to the country's major governmental, legal and financial institutions offers invaluable opportunities to anyone wishing to undertake policy-related research, both contemporary and historical.
