STUDENT PRIZES
COLLEGE PRIZES
A large number of scholarships, prizes and other awards are available
exclusively to Royal
Holloway students, many provided from endowment funds set up by the two
Colleges' early
benefactors. Undergraduate prizes are awarded for academic and non-academic
achievement.
Some awards are in the form of travel bursaries, some are linked to exchange
schemes
abroad, and some may help to finance postgraduate study or professional
training. Further
information on College prizes can be obtained from the Registry.
UNIVERSITY PRIZES
The University of London offers Convocation Awards (up to #500) for activities
of special
interest and general educational value which demonstrate originality and
initiative and are not
closely related to the applicant's course of study. There is also the Dunsheath
Expedition
award to assist graduates and students of the University of London who are
undertaking
expeditions either individually or as part of a group.
DEPARTMENTAL PRIZES
Prizes are awarded (normally on an annual basis) to students who have
demonstrated
outstanding work or progress achieved. Students in the Departments are eligible
for
consideration for five prizes:
STEVE SCHENK MEMORIAL PRIZE
The first of these is for the First Year student who has made most progress in
sociology.
£50 to be spent on books. The second is for the best piece of written work in
sociology for
an undergraduate or postgraduate. £50 to be spent on books.
NINA BOYLE MEMORIAL PRIZE
Awarded annually to a student in either the History or Social Policy Departments
who has
shown particular ability or promise. £30 to be spent however the recipient
wishes.
MARTIN HOLLOWAY PRIZE
Awarded annually to the student in the Faculty of Arts and Music who has shown
academic
and intellectual distinction. £50 to be spent on books.
DRIVER PRIZE
Awarded for outstanding work done as part of the course (e.g. a dissertation).
£30 to be
spent on books. Each year, the College awards a number of travel bursaries for
students
undertaking educationally relevant visits overseas. There are also several
prizes for creative
writing or journalism for which undergraduate students may compete. Details of
these may
