Postgraduate Taught Courses

Postgraduate Bridging Diploma

for Overseas Students

This 9 month full-time Diploma programme is intended for students wishing to pursue a postgraduate degree who have already achieved a high level of proficiency in their chosen academic field but whose English language proficiency does not yet meet the College's requirements (see p. @). The course combines intensive English language study with academic study. Students will take two course units (or their equivalent in half-units) chosen from among the advanced taught courses offered to undergraduates in the Department. The courses chosen will be determined by students' academic background, intended field of further study and course availability. During the second term students are expected to complete an extended essay (up to 10,000 words) under the supervision of their English language tutor working in close conjunction with an academic adviser from the Department.

Students are required to register for the Bridging Diploma 3 weeks earlier than the start of the academic year in order to undertake an intensive English language course.

To proceed to higher degree registration, Diploma students must normally achieve an overall mean pass mark equivalent to a first or upper second classification at undergraduate level. Students wishing to proceed to MPhil or PhD degrees will also be required to prepare a research proposal acceptable to the Department's Research Sub-Committee before being registered for their research degree.
