The Centre for Political Studies was established in 1991 as a focus for the study of politics and political science, particularly at the postgraduate level. The Centre combines the expertise of the Departments of History and Social Policy and Social Science, and draws on the wide range of political interests in other departments. The Centre offers research supervision in: modern political theory, public administration, electoral systems and behaviour, and gender issues in politics.
An innovative MA in the Politics of Democracy provides a high-level examination of theroretical and impirical issues in the study of democratic systems, an advanced research training approved by the ESRC, and the opportunity to undertake a research project. It is an ideal basis for doctoral work or an excellent training for those considering a career in politics or government service anywhere in the world.
Besides the MA and Diploma in Politics of Democracy, the Centre also co-ordinates the undergraduate teaching of politics as 'major' and 'minor' options within the College's course-unit framework, complementing the teaching of politics within the Departments of Social Policy and Social Science and History. The Centre also runs a research seminar programme and is developing a European-oriented research strategy.
The Centre runs seminars and conferences in association with other bodies including Surrey County Council.
