Key Inventors

Overview

There are conflicting views as to the significance of individuals or firms in technological development. Either it is the structure and processes within firms which lead to successful innovation or the most important element is the tacit knowledge of individual inventors. This dichotomy is investigated through an exploration of key inventors – those whose patenting is simultaneously highly productive and also widely cited. The approach has developed the key inventor method which can identify and map inventor and firm networks, as well as provide lessons to improve inventor and firm effectiveness.
