The Legacy of Crusading

Links

Saladin to Saddam

Though this article was written before the Second Gulf War it does look at how Saddam Hussein tried to compare himself to Saladin for propaganda value. It is well written and conatains useful ideas and facts, not least the fact that Saladin was a Kurd!

Bush and the Crusades

This article was written by a Marxist historian and doesn't he know it. He talks about Bush's use of Crusade rhetoric and its effect. His major complaint is that people cannot really use crusade language without studying the crusades but to be honest he would have done well to follow his own advice.

Moral Crusades in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Whilst this article does not examine the rhetoric of crusading, it does demonstrate how the language that developed around crusading became adopted by people on a mission which they perceived to be either morally right or divinely ordained.

Modern day Jihad and Crusade

A hard-hitting article looking at Jihad and Crusades in the modern context. Though one must doubt many of the conclusions it makes for interesting reading.
