Netserf:: the online Medieval History Resource.
This site is not directly focused on the crusades though it does provide much pertinent material. Its main strength is the depth of its information on political and social conditions of European countries at the time of the crusades. It's a great source for all manner of background information and is written in a scholarly manner. The information is laid out clearly with an effective search ability. It also has a section of links to all manner of sites concerning the political history of other countries such as France and the Holy Roman Empire at that time.
The Online Reference Book for Medieval Studies
This site is a brilliant place to look for primary and secondary documents concerning a wide variety of subjects. There are several sources for the crusades but once again, the main strength of this site lies in the sheer quantity of background it can give for Western Europe at this time. There are also links to courses running on the crusades and for medieval studies and bibiliographies for further reading.
Catholic Encyclopeadia: Crusades
A wide ranging site with plenty of useful definitions and a wealth of information. It is clearly laid out in accessible language. It comes recommended by several other search engines and provides far more than a basic background for the crusades. However, its bias is fairly severe. The reference to the crusades as a reaction to 'Mohammedan tyrrany,' does not inspire a reader with confidence in the author's impartiality.
This site is a good introduction for those who are developing an interest in the crusades. It covers some of the early detail of the crusades and crusader states in the early 12th century. It is a popular site and is well laid out and presented. It does however, only present a basic introduction and despite an interesting section on coinage, contains no useful primary sources.
Images of Medieval Art and Architecture
A good site for those who are interested in this subject. Though there is very little schoalrly discussion on any of the sites featured. There is a wealth of quality photogrpahy on every archealogical site giving you a strong idea of the building and its main features.
This is a fantastic site with a wealth of useful information, some of which is not readily available elsewhere. It has a great many primary documents for the entire crusade period and these are easily accessible. There are also many primary sources for Europe at this time, which can provide a useful background. Caution, however, should excercised when using this site because some of the documents displayed are old translations. In many cases these old translations have been updated so if you want to use a source shown on this site for your own reference, you would be well advised to check whether there is a more recent edition of the translation. Still despite this: a great site that is well worth a look.
A brilliant site for the kingdom of Jerusalem.
This is a really good site with in-depth and scholarly investigations of all the major elements of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem. The only slight drawback is that it is difficult to navigate through the site.
A good site for primary documents on the crusadesl. Some of the documents featured are actually quite hard to come by so this site is a good one to have a look at!
This site is a translation of the account by Ibn-al-Qalanisi of the approach of the second crusade. He was a contemporary of the crusade and therefore, his account rewards close inspection.
