Maps showing the situation of the Levant at the time of the Crusades
This is an excellent site showing a range of maps which demonstrate how the political boundries of the west and near east changed during the period of the crusades. There are also several other maps showing the course of individual events such as the progression of an individual crusade.
An interesting source providing a veritable goldmine of crusade illuminations depicting many of the crucial crusades events: well worth a look.
The archieve of historical journals
This site contains a huge quantity of articles covering all sorts of areas but with a very good selection of material on the crusades. It is user friendly and easy to download and access the relavant journals. Because the articles, this site contains, cover such a wide variety of subjects this site is also extremely useful for wider reading and the development of background knowledge on any given subject.
The Online Reference Book for Medieval Studies
This site is a brilliant place to look for primary and secondary documents concerning a wide variety of subjects. There are several sources for the crusades but once again, the main strength of this site lies in the sheer quantity of background it can give for Western Europe at this time. There are also links to courses running on the crusades and for medieval studies and bibiliographies for further reading.
'Find that Article,' A database for scholarly journals
Though not as comprehensive as Jstor, this site still has a strong database of scholarly journals and is certainly worth a look if you are trying to track down an elusive article.
This site is a good introduction for those who are developing an interest in the crusades. It covers some of the early detail of the crusades and crusader states in the early 12th century. It is a popular site and is well laid out and presented. It does however, only present a basic introduction and despite an interesting section on coinage, contains no useful primary sources.
This is a fantastic site with a wealth of useful information, some of which is not readily available elsewhere. It has a great many primary documents for the entire crusade period and these are easily accessible. There are also many primary sources for Europe at this time, which can provide a useful background. Caution, however, should excercised when using this site because some of the documents displayed are old translations. In many cases these old translations have been updated so if you want to use a source shown on this site for your own reference, you would be well advised to check whether there is a more recent edition of the translation. Still despite this: a great site that is well worth a look.
Volumes made available online by K.Setton
This site provides immediate access to a variety of important crusades texts from a range of different authors. These texts are available in full and the site has been set up to be extremely user friendly as it is possible to skip from chapter to chapter. The available works are, however, a little out of date as much of the available work was written between the 1960s and 1980s. Still despite this, it is a useful site and a good resource.
A Good overview of the crusades
In many ways this is a very simplistic site showing little depth about the crusades. However, it does provide a useful basic overview of the main crusades events.
An interesting article on the legacy of the crusades
Though this is not a site in itself, I have included this article which can be found in the 'Crisis magazine,' because it provides a very interesting insight into the history of the idea of the crusades. It ably links both past and modern events showing how each influenced the other and helped to shape modern history.
