A fantastic site to gain an overview Byzantine studies.

Though this site is not primarily focused towards Byzantium and the crusades it does provide a vast quantity of background information on the wider history of the Byzantine Empire. It comes conmplete with maps, timelines and all sorts of other social and political history information and diagrams. Well worth a look.


Yasou: the Byzantine Empire.

A remarkably argumentatively balanced website when you consider that its motto is 'Young, Aggressive, Sincere, Organised and United.' It provides a useful background to Byzantium as a whole and does provide some information on the relationship between Byzantium and the crusades.


An interesting article on the Crusades from the Byzantine perspective.

This is an interesting and insightful article on the Byzantine and Muslim perspectives on the crusades. It is well worth a look.


Byzantine Studies on the internet

An excellent site for those who are interested not only in Byzantium itself but the background of the medieval world at that time. This site has a good overview of medieval Byzantium but its main stength is the links it gives to information on other civilisations and the effect they had on the development of Byzantium.


Ten saints of Byzantium sources in translation.

This site provides 10 primary documents relating to female saints in Byzantium a particularly useful source therefore for anyone interested in women's studies and social history.


The Byzantine Empire (A site focused on the histories of the individual emperors)

The main feature of this site is the short potted histories of each of the later Byzantine Emperors beginning with Alexius I. The histories are brief but are of value for someone wishing only to gain a short overview of an emperor's reign.


Chronologies of Byzantium and the Crusades

This site is an excellent source of reference for anyone studying the relationship between the Crusader states in the Levant and the Byzantine Empire. It provides a very detailed timeline as well as a list of emperors and their dates. Its the sort of thing that is always worth printing out and keeping for reference.
